The 2026 season of the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division begins this weekend with growing commercial momentum around the league and a new benchmark set by defending champions Athlone Town.
Athlone’s back to back title successes in 2024 and 2025 have them in pole position for a three-peat but there will be strong opposition from others as well.
The league enters the new season with stronger commercial partnerships, improving infrastructure, and increasing recognition of the value of women’s sport to sponsors and communities.
A Champion With Ambition
Athlone Town’s success reflects a carefully built model combining strong coaching structures, investment in player development, and a clear alignment between the club’s men’s and women’s programmes.
Their rise has reinforced the message that the Women’s Premier Division is evolving into a genuinely competitive national league capable of producing new champions and compelling rivalries.
Maintaining that position will be the challenge in 2026 as rivals strengthen squads and raise expectations.
Commercial Stability and Sponsorship Value
The continued support of title sponsor SSE Airtricity remains a cornerstone of the league’s development, providing visibility and stability for the competition.
Brands can look at the Women’s Premier Division is an increasingly attractive platform that combines community reach with alignment around diversity, participation, and opportunity in sport.
The growth of integrated club structures — where women’s teams operate within established League of Ireland organisations — has also strengthened the commercial environment. Clubs such as Shamrock Rovers Women, Shelbourne, Bohemians and Galway United are continuing to develop their commercial operations alongside improved matchday presentation.
Raising the attendance figures will be the next major challenge, with innovation to the fore in terms of getting closer to the numbers attending the Men’s games.
Cork City are running a promotion on the opening weekend whereby all those attending Friday night’s home game for the Men will get free admission to their first Women’s game the following weekend.
TG4 will broadcast a game most weekends starting with Shelbourne Vs Treaty United on Saturday, with coverage of all games included in a LOI.TV subscription
Facilities and Matchday Experience
One of the most noticeable changes across the league in recent seasons has been the improvement in facilities and venues.
Women’s matches are increasingly staged at established League of Ireland stadiums such as Tallaght Stadium and Tolka Park, providing better spectator experiences and stronger broadcast environments.
Those improvements align with broader national ambitions to expand participation in women’s sport and create more visible role models for young players across Ireland.
Competitive Landscape
Behind the defending champions, several clubs are expected to mount serious challenges.
Shelbourne Women remain one of the league’s most consistent performers and bring strong European experience, while Shamrock Rovers Women continue to invest heavily in their women’s programme as part of the club’s broader strategic development.
Peamount United Women, long regarded as one of the most successful clubs in the league’s history, will again aim to combine youth development with experienced leadership.
The strengthening of clubs outside Dublin — highlighted by Athlone’s title win and the continued growth of teams such as Galway United Women — is also contributing to a more balanced and nationally representative competition.
European Opportunity
Qualification for the UEFA Women’s Champions League remains one of the league’s biggest incentives. This season the possibilities are doubled with the runner up gaining qualification to the new Women’s Europa League. The extension of European potential has been a significant driver in the Men’s game, taking away the danger for fans of any runaway title winner.
European participation provides exposure, prize money, and the chance for Irish clubs to measure themselves against the professional standards of leading European teams. It also enhances the visibility of the domestic league for players considering their development pathways.
Strategic Importance for Irish Sport
In terms of Irish football and for Irish sport more broadly, the Women’s Premier Division sits within a wider movement to expand the visibility and sustainability of women’s sport. It’s weekly schedule, link ijn the public mind to the support of the Women’s National team, and increasing player numbers among young girls make it a pathway to increasing fandom, as has been led by the Women’s Super League in England.
The continued growth of attendance, participation, and commercial engagement suggests the league is moving steadily toward a stronger professional structure.
With Athlone Town setting the standard and challengers ready to respond, the 2026 season promises not only a compelling sporting contest but another step forward in establishing the Women’s Premier Division as an increasingly valuable platform for Irish sport and business.
