Tesco in Ireland is already a strong supporter of Ladies Gaelic Football and is in discussion with Sport for Business over a new initiative to launch later this year.
In the UK the company supports the FA Tesco Skills initiative bringing sports coaching into schools up and down the country.
There have also been reports over the summer of Sports Direct, which trades in Ireland as Sportsworld, taking over space in some of the larger stores in order to strengthen the retail sportswear offering.
The food retail sector is an important one where continued growth and expansion has led to significant sporting sponsorship in recent years, most notably through Centra’s support for the All Ireland Hurling Championship and Supervalu’s similar backing of the All Ireland Football Championship.
It is not likely that Tesco will be involved in any major new partnership deals with Irish sport in the very short term but over time it is an organisation that has a track record of supporting sport at youth and grassroots level.
