Global Irish Economic ForumSport is to play a major part in the 2013 Global Irish Forum to take place at Dublin Castle on October 4th and 5th.

The Forum was started in 2009 and this will be the third time that 300 business, social, political and cultural leaders from around the world have gathered to consider how they can help promote and develop Ireland.

While much of the conversation may have centred on Ireland’s sporting heritage and communities in 2009 and 2011 this year is the first in which a specific panel is being devoted to it.

The panel discussion entitled ‘Promoting the interests of Ireland and its people abroad through Sport’ will be moderated by Ger Gilroy of Newstalk and draw on the experience of six panellists.

Eugenie Buckley runs Suiko Consulting in Australia and has been a key advisor within Australian support over a number of years.  A former CEO of Brisbane Roar she has experience across cricket, rugby, AFL and Formula One in terms of improving the business capacity of sporting organisations.

Páraic Duffy is Director General of the GAA, fresh from another successful month of All Ireland Finals played in front of capacity crowds at Croke Park.  The growth of the GAA internationally will be on the agenda, exemplified by last week’s international hurling tournament in Galway supported by Aer Lingus and Etihad Airways.

Hugo MacNeill has combined his winning careers in business with Goldman Sachs and rugby with Ireland in becoming one of the most vocal proponents of Ireland on an influential world stage.  As Chair of the Ireland Funds he has played a key role in bringing philanthropic support to life in the country.

Martin Naughton of Glen Dimplex was instrumental in bringing the Emerald Isle Classic to Dublin in 2012 and through the Naughton Foundation supports many educational, technology and sporting projects.

International cricketer Kevin O’Brien and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring complete the panel.

Sport for Business will host a Round Table discussion on Philanthropy and Sport on November 28th 2013.  Click here for more details.

Sport for Business highlighted 12 key points when hosting a Round Table on Sport and the Irish Abroad at the Embassy of Ireland in London in March of this year.  These ranged from practical suggestions on twinning of clubs, and creation of sporting festivals to creating networks of linked supporters clubs.

Sport for Business will report on the outputs of the group and assist where possible in advance by supplying information to participants, and afterwards by highlighting areas of potential benefit for Irish sport and business from reaching out to a wider global community.
