Several important football games took place over the weekend, but our focus was on one at Tallaght Stadium, where both teams had every right to be there, taking part and delivering a great occasion. Elsewhere, we checked in on events in rowing, horse racing, boxing, rugby and as far afield as Australia.

Shelbourne FC – Pearl’s a Winner
Shelbourne lifted the Club Orange Women’s FAI Cup on Sunday with a 3–1 win over Athlone Town at Tallaght Stadium. Halle Harcourt, Alex Kavanagh and Maeve Wollmer put the final beyond Athlone’s reach before half-time, delivering another Cup triumph for Shels captain Pearl Slattery.
Béibhinn Parsons – Home Town Hero
Two tries against Japan made Parsons Ireland’s record women’s Test try scorer, with 24. The Galway winger reached the mark on home ground as Ireland won their WXV Global Series match 31–24 at the Dexcom Stadium on Sunday.
Zoe Hyde and Mags Cremen – Sprinting Away
The Irish pair took women’s double sculls gold at the inaugural World Rowing Shanghai Sprints on Saturday. They beat the Netherlands in a rematch of August’s World Championship final, this time over a fast 500-metre course.
Aoife O’Rourke – Boxing
O’Rourke won a fourth European title in Sofia on Friday, defeating Türkiye’s Büşra Işıldar by unanimous decision in the 75kg final. Her gold followed sister Lisa’s 80kg victory the previous day.
Paddy Twomey – Horse Racing 1-2
Twomey trained the first two home in Saturday’s Goffs Million at the Curragh. Trean won under Billy Lee, with stablemate Hi Corbett Court finishing second to complete a remarkable result in the €1 million race.
Conor McKenna – AFL Grand Final Winner
The Tyrone man scored in Brisbane Lions’ seven-point Grand Final win over Fremantle, becoming the first Irish player to win two AFL premierships. If you haven’t seen his Dad coming onto the pitch to celebrate, it is worth a look below.
