Munster Rugby and the IRFU have confirmed the appointment of Avan Lee as Interim Chief Executive Officer, bringing a decade of leadership experience at the Hurricanes to the province at an important moment in its development.
Lee will take up the role towards the end of October, with a brief to work alongside the Munster Rugby Board, the IRFU and stakeholders across the province to support success on and off the field.
The appointment follows the announcement that Ian Flanagan will step down as CEO at the end of this month.
Lee served for ten years as Chief Executive of the Hurricanes, one of New Zealand’s leading Super Rugby franchises. His career spans rugby administration, governance, commercial development and high-performance sport.
He also brings a personal understanding of the Irish rugby landscape, having spent nearly a decade living here and playing club rugby.
“While my professional career has taken me around the world, Ireland has been an important part of my own rugby journey,” he said.
“I spent nearly a decade living here, including playing club rugby, and I developed a deep appreciation for the game’s place in Irish communities and the unique connection between rugby clubs and their supporters.”
Munster Rugby Chair Ger Malone said Lee had impressed the Board during the interview process with his experience and understanding of the demands facing professional sport.
“He brings strong leadership credentials, significant rugby expertise and a collaborative approach that we believe will be hugely valuable to Munster Rugby. The Board has every confidence that he will provide strong stewardship of the province and we look forward to working closely with him in the months ahead.”
IRFU Chief Executive Kevin Potts described Lee as a highly experienced sports executive with a deep understanding of professional rugby and the wider sporting landscape.
“The IRFU is committed to supporting Munster Rugby in achieving success both on and off the field, and we are confident that Avan’s leadership, experience and strategic insight will make a positive impact during this important period for the province.”
Lee acknowledged the challenges ahead while emphasising the opportunity to build on Munster’s history, supporter connection and standing within the game.
“My message to everyone connected with the province is simple: we are stronger when we stand together. If we unite behind a shared ambition and a commitment to excellence, I am confident Munster Rugby can achieve great things in the years ahead.”
Sport for Business Perspective
An interim appointment can carry a substantial leadership brief. For Munster, the task is to provide stability while maintaining momentum across the sporting and commercial sides of the organisation.
Ten years leading a Super Rugby franchise brings relevant experience of the relationships between performance, revenue, governance and supporter expectations. Lee’s previous time in Ireland should also help him understand the community connections that give provincial rugby its particular strength.
His call for unity is a useful starting point. Turning that into progress will require clear communication, visible accountability and a shared understanding of what success looks like among the Board, the IRFU, staff, players, partners and supporters.
Professional sports administration continues to grow more demanding. Munster’s next chapter will depend on giving experienced leadership both the support and the scrutiny needed to deliver.
