Philip Quinn’s departure from Munster Rugby after almost two decades marks the end of a contribution to the province that deserves recognition beyond the headlines about changes in its senior leadership.
A rock-solid operator, Quinn developed under the late Garrett Fitzgerald and grew with an organisation whose ambitions and operational demands expanded considerably during his tenure.
He provided continuity through change, stepping in as interim chief executive before Ian Flanagan’s appointment in 2019.
Much of the work that keeps a professional sporting organisation moving takes place away from the cameras. Finance, facilities and operations underpin what supporters see on matchday, and Quinn brought a steady hand and a deep understanding of Munster to those responsibilities.
He also helped the province look ahead. His leadership on sustainability put environmental responsibility firmly on Munster’s agenda, and the organisation’s work earned international recognition at the recent Sport Positive Awards.
It was a commitment backed by practical action across its facilities and partnerships.
His contribution to bringing major Munster fixtures to Páirc Uí Chaoimh will be another enduring part of that legacy. Those occasions have demonstrated the potential to reach wider audiences, create memorable sporting experiences and generate valuable revenue. The recent Champions Cup meeting with Racing 92 provided a successful final chapter in that work.
At Sport for Business, we have had the pleasure of welcoming Philip to speak at a number of our events, including on Sports Tourism and at last year’s Playing for the Planet Conference with the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.
He was always generous with his experience and willing to share what he had learned, offering an honest, practical perspective on running professional sport.
He brought warmth and decency to every conversation.
Munster is losing considerable experience and institutional knowledge. Those of us who have worked with Philip will also recognise a thoroughly good person whose contribution extended well beyond his job title.
We wish him every success in whatever comes next.
