Dr Úna May holds one of the most influential positions in Irish sport as Chief Executive of Sport Ireland, the statutory agency responsible for supporting participation, performance, governance, and sporting infrastructure development.
Having joined the organisation in 1998 and become CEO in January 2022, she brings deep institutional knowledge to a role that connects Government investment with the organisations responsible for delivering sport nationwide.
Her leadership spans funding programmes, high-performance development, inclusion, coaching, anti-doping and the continuing evolution of the Sport Ireland Campus.
In 2026, increased core funding and a multiannual funding model further emphasised the importance of long-term planning across national governing bodies and local sports partnerships.
A former international competitor in orienteering and mountain running, May combines a strong understanding of athlete needs with extensive public administration experience.
Few individuals have as broad an influence on how Irish sport is funded, governed and developed.

This is the 14th year we have listed 50 Women of Influence in Irish Sport. We will add new names daily from now until early December.
We have an open nomination process, and you can nominate potential additions until our closing date of November 10th, 2026.
Our definition of influence is broad and includes those making a difference in how sport is governed, managed, and brought to life. This year’s list will include CEO’s, leaders, founders, coaches, storytellers and more. To shine a light on those who may not be as familiar, we deliberately exclude those who are still active players in their sport.
We’ll host our Annual Women in Sport Conference at Lidl HQ on Tuesday, December 1st, featuring a range of national and international speakers and a room full of inspiring guests.
