Today is a bittersweet one as Special Olympics CEO Matt English closes his office door at the Sport Ireland campus for the final time.
Matt has led Special Olympics Ireland for the past 17 years, turning it into one of the most positive places on the connection point between sport and a better society.
Since becoming the first country outside of the United States to host a World Games back in 2003, Special Olympics Ireland has been a global leader within this important movement.
It provides physical activity and community for people with an intellectual disability and their families. To be exposed to the joy this brings for only a few moments will be among the best moments of your year.
Matt English has been key to that. His light touch, warm humanity, and deep understanding of the power of sport have served the Special Olympics and Ireland well over the past two decades.
It has been a pleasure and a privilege to know him, work with him, and call him a friend.
Looking on the positive side, though, his retirement will mean more time with family and on the golf course, and there’s always next year’s National Games to volunteer for.
He leaves the keys in the very capable hands of Karen Coventry, who will carry the torch forward.
Farewell, Matt, and thanks.
