President Michael D Higgins and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald were among the sold out crowd at Dalymount Park last night to watch a musical tour de force, followed by a statement football match the echoes of which will reverberate around the world.
This was always going to be about more than the game since Bohs invited the Palestine National Women’s team to play in an event to raise funds for humanitarian causes looking to assist in the war that Israel is waging in Gaza.
A Palestinian flag was placed on every seat in the ground and shortly before kick-off, a mural of Hind Rajab, a six-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed in Gaza, was unveiled outside the ground.
Fans who were not able to buy a ticket were encouraged to purchase a stream of the game or a non-attendance ticket, or to make a donation online.
Those who did make it will long remember the scenes of celebration after Palestine scored a late winner.
The Palestinian team had visited Glendalough and been hosted at Áras an Úachtarain by President Higgins and at the Mansion House by Dublin Lord Mayor Daithí de Róiste in the build up to the game.
