Ireland’s track athletes have made an impressive return to action since different lockdowns have eased in the past year and the sport will be a main focus this weekend when the Sport Ireland Indoor Arena at the Sport Ireland Campus hosts the Irish Life Health Elite Micro Meet on Saturday and Sunday.
Ciara Mageean and Nadia power in particular have been running at the top of their game-breaking Irish records at meets across Europe as they build up to next month’s European Indoor Athletics Championship in Poland.
Their choice to race in these vents prevents them from competing here this weekend but the cast of those who are is sprinkled with star names.
Sarah Lavin will race in the 60 metres hurdles before Paralympics hopefully Greta Streimikyte lines up in the Women’s 1500 metres.
Mark English and Phil Healy will be among the other stars looking to post a good time with European Indoor qualification on the line, as well as Category E World Ranking points for all those athletes working towards Tokyo qualification.
The event has received Government approval via the Sport Ireland Expert Group and will be conducted under strict Covid-19 protocols.
Entry is restricted to athletes tracking towards Olympic Games qualification and European Indoor Championships qualification, including senior relay panels. A small number of additional athletes have also been invited to ensure the event is compliant with permitting requirements so that all results are valid for qualification purposes. The participation of each athlete has been approved by Government via Sport Ireland Expert Group.
A full stream of both days will be available on the Athletics Ireland YouTube Channel.
