The Aviva Stadium has applied for designation under the Sale of Tickets Act and has been granted a status which means that all events taking place there will now be covered under the law to prevent the resale of tickets at more than face value.

The law came into effect in the summer at a time when attendance at grounds was limited.

Next month’s Republic of Ireland Vs Portugal and Ireland Vs New Zealand games, both of which will attract a full stadium will now see fans protected from ticket touts and secondary selling sites.

It will be an offence to offer for sale tickets that are marked up from the price at which they were originally sold.

The penalty will be a fine and may include imprisonment.

There are exemptions for charitable or club fundraisers.

The popular Viagogo site which had been advertising tickets for the Portugal game is now showing that the game is ‘sold out’ on the site.

Tickets sold through the FAI’s official Ticketmaster partnership were snapped up within one hour when they went on sale this week.
