It is a big week for SSE Airtricity League clubs in Europe with Shamrock rovers getting things underway in the Champions League Qualifiers this evening in Slovakia.

They face Slovan Bratislava who have a rich pedigree in Europe having won the old Cup Winners Cup in 1969 beating Barcelona in the Final.

They are the reigning Slovakian Champions having secured their third consecutive Super Liga title last season, their 15th title overall. They won the league with a ten-point gap to FC DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda but will be looking to improve their European fortunes this season after they suffered a surprise penalty shoot-out defeat to Finnish side KuPS in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.

A familiar name will be former Rangers and Manchester City winger Vladimir Weiss who has returned to his native Slovakia to play under his father Vladimir Weiss Snr.

Stephen Bradley’s side travelled to Slovakia yesterday morning and will kick off at 5.30 pm this evening. The match will be available to watch via the Shamrock Rovers website at a cost of €10 at shamrockrovers.ie.

Dundalk face Welsh Premier League side Newtown FC tomorrow, Thursday at 5-45 PM in a game which will also be streamed on LOITV at a similar cost of €10.

Icelandic side FH Hafnarfjarðar provide the opposition for Sligo Rovers in the opening round of the UEFA Conference League, with a 7 PM kick-off.

Bohemians round out the important week with an 8:45 PM kick off in front of a sold-out Aviva Stadium, with 6,000 fans in attendance against Iceland’s Stjarnan.

Success for any of the Irish teams in Europe brings with it a significant financial bonus, especially important for the year that is in it.
