A total of 35 projects from the 90 who had applied have received funding in the allocations of the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund announced yesterday.
We covered the overall picture in this analysis feature published on Monday afternoon – LSSIF Funding Extends to €173 Million, 35 of 90 Projects Given Funding to Proceed.
Breaking down the 35 projects gives us some indication on the thinking that went into deciding one over the other.
Nine of the projects are credited as being for multi sport use, totalling €67.7 million of the funding.
These projects include the Cavan Regional Sports Campus receiving €19 million, sports hall facilities in Louth and Limerick which have been given €7.2 and €7.5 million respectively; Outdoor pitch and other facilities in Kildare (€3 million), Wexford (€4.9 million), Leitrim which includes a €400 metre athletics track (€3.3 million), a sports hall in Dalkey, County Dublin being shared by Cuala GAA Club, Dalkey United Football Club and community groups (€4.6 million); a regional hub in Letterkenny including pitch and built facilities (€8.7 million); and a multi sport facility in Mayo including an athletics track and pitches (€7.5 million).
Football was a winner as well with signature projects for Bohemians and Dublin City Council, and for Sligo Rovers getting €24.7 million and €16.4 million apiece.
Smaller projects include €650,000 towards upgraded floodlighting at Tallaght Stadium, an all weather facility in Cork getting €1 million, and €2 million for Wexford FC for pitch and facility development.
The GAA has worked well with the LGFA and Camogie to deliver applications that will help with facilities and integration. The Centre of Excellence for Dublin GAA at the Spawell will include four pitches and ancillary facilities. The €7 million granted towards this will not cover the full costs but is referenced as being deliverable in phases.
The same caveat of some but not enough for the full works applies to GAA projects in Kildare, Wexford, Meath, Kerry and Galways with additional facilities that should be able to be completed with €5.5 million and €3.2 million in Roscommon and Clare.
Rugby was a big winner in the last round with Dexcom Park and the RDS both getting substantial funding but this time that is less so with only Killarney RFC getting funded to the tune of €750,000.
€8.9 million will go towards the construction of a new FINA Standard 25 metre pool in Edenderry, County Offaly.
Basketball’s redevelopment of the National Stadium at Tallaght did not make yesterday’s list but is considered to be one of the projects that will feature high enough on the reserve list to be still considered very much a live project, as is the case with the Football stadium for Drogheda United, believed to be the next in preference on the FAI recommendations.
Athletics had placed it’s ‘priority chip’ on the redevelopment of Morton Stadium with DCU. The fact of this being a shared facility means that the €7 million allocated, while not the full amount, will be able to get the project moving in the right direction.
There will be new athletics tracks included in projects at Mallow in Cork, the Mayo Sports Campus, at Shannonside in Leitrim, and Seafield in Meath. €1 million has also been granted towards a new Dome facility for Athletics in Trim.
