We will not know the details until the formal Department briefing this afternoon, but it looks as though sport has had some big wins in the 2025 Budget announced yesterday by former Minister in the space Jack Chambers and Paschal Donohoe.

Minister Donohoe’s speech mentioned a headline figure of €230 million, but we will not know until later quite how that is broken down.

Nonetheless, compared to the target figure set out in the National Sports Policy of €€220 million in funding by 2027, Minister of State Thomas Byrne and Minister Catherine Byrne, as well as the department officials, have negotiated well.

Minister Donohoe alluded to this when announcing the € 230 million Sports Community facility Funding last week, which is also € in capital rather than current spending.

Last night, a €30 million figure in core funding for NGBs and Local Sports Partnerships was floating around, representing another increase. There was also news of a €1 million Disability in Sport Fund and an additional €1.2 million towards performance programmes aimed at LA2028.

There was also a hint that the Federation of Irish Sport’s long campaign for Tax reform which would treat donations to sporting clubs more favourably would also be part of today’s announcement.

We plan to have an update from Government Buildings in a Sport for Business PM Bulletin later where some of this good news and maybe more will be confirmed.
