We have a new series this morning entitled Champions of the weekend where we will select three performances from Irish sport that are worthy of the title.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Lidl, one of Sport for Business’ partners and backers of our coverage of Women and Sport.

Munster Rugby

The wind blew on Saturday in Thomond with a ferocity that meant kicking into it was likely to see the ball loop back over your own head.

Munster have had a tough start to the season but this was a gutsy performance and a big win on the opening weekend of the Investec Champions Cup.

There was romance too as Shane Daly scored the second try on his 100th appearance for the province.

14-0 up at half time with the wind looked like there would be a battle to be won in the second but two red cards for Stade Francais, four tries and three conversions were enough to leave the Munster faithful happy heading into the evening.

Nick Griggs

The European Cross Country Championships have been a medal hunting ground for Tyrone runner Nick Griggs and he came through again on Sunday winning Silver in the U23 race, his third piece of precious metal at this level in the last three years.

He was one of three in contention into the final 400 metres but was pipped by one second by last year’s Gold medal winner.

Griggs will still be eligible to run at this age grade for the next two years, holding out hope of more to come.

Major plaudits as well to Niamg Allen who came 11th in the Senior Women’s Race, the first time she has competed at this level and remarkably only three months after giving birth to her daughter Lily.

Irish Women’s Cricket Team

Ireland’s Women’s cricket team completed an historic 3-0 clean sweep in their series with Bangladesh at the weekend, with a dramatic penultimate ball victory over the hosts in the third T20 international of the three-match series.

Ireland needed 15 runs off the last over of six balls which looked a tall order but Laura Delany proceeded to hit two sixes and a four to in the first five to win the game by one run with one ball to spare.
