Galway End the Wait as Coulter Makes History
The August Bank Holiday weekend produced historic victories at Croke Park, Malahide and Carrickmines, alongside an impressive collection of medals for Irish competitors on the international stage.
Galway’s return to the summit of Ladies Gaelic Football earns top billing, but there were compelling contenders across golf, tennis, boxing, bowls and judo.
1. Galway Ladies Footballers – Champions After 22 Years
Galway claimed their second TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship title with a dramatic 2-7 to 0-12 victory over Kerry at Croke Park.
The triumph ended a 22-year wait since Galway’s previous senior success in 2004. Leanne Coen scored both Galway goals before Eva Noone landed the decisive point in the 58th minute.
Kerry had one final opportunity to turn the game around, but Galway survived the late pressure to complete a championship journey that had also included victory over defending champions Dublin and a semi-final win against Armagh.
Captain Kate Geraghty lifted the Brendan Martin Cup, while her influence throughout the game was recognised with the Player of the Match award.
It was an emotional and historic afternoon for Galway football and the outstanding Irish sporting achievement of the weekend.
2. Beth Coulter – A Dream Professional Debut
Beth Coulter could hardly have scripted a better beginning to her professional career.
The 22-year-old won the Women’s Irish Challenge at Malahide Golf Club in her first tournament as a professional, becoming the first Irish golfer to win on their professional debut.
Coulter carded a final-round 70 to finish on five under par alongside South Korea’s Ayeon Yang. Returning to the 18th for a sudden-death play-off, Coulter produced a birdie at the first extra hole to secure the LET Access Series title.
It was a landmark victory for one of the most highly regarded young players in Irish golf, providing the home tournament with an Irish champion and a compelling breakthrough story.
3. Team Northern Ireland – A Golden Finish in Glasgow
Gary Kelly and Adam McKeown delivered a golden conclusion to the Commonwealth Games for Team Northern Ireland by winning the men’s pairs lawn bowls title.
The pair defeated England’s Nick Brett and Jamie Walker in the final, adding another major success to Northern Ireland’s proud Commonwealth bowls tradition.
There was also a significant silver medal for Michaela Walsh in the women’s 57kg boxing competition. It was Walsh’s fourth Commonwealth Games medal, following silvers in 2014 and 2018 and gold in Birmingham in 2022.
Rachael Hawkes added a bronze medal in the women’s -70kg judo competition, ensuring that Team Northern Ireland remained among the medals across three different sports over the closing weekend in Glasgow.
4. Conor Gannon – Irish Open Champion on Home Soil
Conor Gannon produced the biggest victory of his career by winning the DLR Irish Open men’s singles title at Carrickmines.
The 24-year-old Dubliner defeated Estonia’s Markus Moulder 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 in a demanding three-set final.
The victory earned Gannon his first ITF singles trophy and made him the first Irishman to win the tournament since Pete Bothwell in 2018.
Gannon had already defeated a number of seeded opponents during the week before holding his nerve in front of a home crowd on Centre Court.
It was an important result for the player and a welcome Irish success at the country’s leading international tennis tournament.
5. Roscommon and Antrim – All-Ireland Champions
Galway were not the only county celebrating on a memorable TG4 All-Ireland Finals day.
Roscommon produced an authoritative performance to defeat Fermanagh by 2-12 to 0-6 in the intermediate final. The result secured Roscommon’s first title at the grade since 2005 and returned the county to the senior championship for 2027.
Antrim captured the junior championship following a dramatic 1-13 to 2-9 victory over Carlow. Maria O’Neill kicked the winning point deep into added time as Antrim secured a record-equalling fourth All-Ireland junior title.
Three finals produced three champions from three different provinces, with Galway, Roscommon and Antrim all departing Croke Park with national silverware.
6. Pádraig Harrington – Another International Podium
Pádraig Harrington completed another strong week on the international stage by finishing third at the Portugal Invitational.
Harrington finished the tournament on 15 under par, four shots behind winner Zach Johnson and two behind runner-up Stewart Cink.
It was another podium finish during a hugely productive season for the 54-year-old, following his second US Senior Open victory earlier in the summer.
Harrington’s sustained competitiveness against the leading players on the senior circuit continues to make him one of Ireland’s most consistent international sporting performers.
