Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports worthy of highlighting. This weekend, we highlight action in Hurling from one traditional winner and one rare one, Rowing and a family affair in Show Jumping.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Dublin City Council, one of Sport for Business’s key partners, and a leader in the provision of sporting opportunity.

New York Hurling

New York GAA achieved a historic milestone by clinching their first-ever Lory Meagher Cup title at Croke Park, defeating Cavan 4-17 to 2-17. The Exiles dominated early, with goals from Tomás O’Connor, AJ Willis, and Dara Walsh establishing a commanding lead. Man of the Match David Mangan added a fourth goal and contributed 1-7 overall. Captain Johnny Glynn, a former Galway All-Ireland winner, lifted the trophy, marking a triumphant return to championship hurling after nearly two decades. Despite a late surge from Cavan, New York’s early advantage proved insurmountable, securing their promotion to the Nicky Rackard Cup.

Irish Show Jumping

Ireland’s show jumping team achieved a remarkable feat over the weekend by securing their third consecutive Nations Cup victory at the CSIO4* Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, Canada. This triumph underscores Ireland’s dominance in international equestrian sports and highlights the exceptional talent within the team. The winning team included Conor Swail and three members of the Coyle family—brothers Daniel and Jordan, and their cousin Christian

Irish Rowing

Ireland celebrated a successful weekend at the 2025 European Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, securing two medals and showcasing strong performances across multiple events. Olympic bronze medallist Fiona Murtagh earned silver in the women’s single sculls—her first major medal in the event—finishing behind Great Britain’s Lauren Henry. In the men’s double sculls, Fintan McCarthy, transitioning from lightweight to heavyweight, teamed up with Konan Pazzaia to claim bronze, marking Pazzaia’s first senior international medal. Ireland also achieved several fourth-place finishes, with Mags Cremen and Zoe Hyde narrowly missing the podium in the women’s double sculls, and Izzy Clements and Jake McCarthy placing fourth in their respective lightweight single sculls finals.

Tipperary Hurling

Tipperary captured the 2025 All-Ireland Under-20 Hurling Championship with a commanding 3-19 to 1-16 victory over Kilkenny at UPMC Nowlan Park. Paddy McCormack starred with two goals and a point, while Conor Martin added 1-4. Captain Sam O’Farrell lifted the James Nowlan Cup, dedicating the win to the late Dillon Quirke, whose legacy continues to inspire the Premier County. This triumph marks Tipperary’s 12th U20 title and their first since 2019.
