Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that deserve recognition. This weekend, we highlight action in Football, Sailing, Boxing, Ultra running and Gaelic Games.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to you by AIB, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and a supporter of our coverage of Gaelic Games.
Shamrock Rovers
A first double of the Sports Direct FAI Cup and SSE Airtricity Premier League for Ireland’s most dominant club, Shamrock Rovers, since 1987 was the reward for Sunday’s Cup Final win over Cork City at the Aviva Stadium. There were 35,252 fans in the ground, and the atmosphere was great to round out the domestic season.
Ben O’Shaughnessy and Ethan Spain
Irish sailors Ben O’Shaughnessy (Royal Cork Yacht Club) and Ethan Spain (National Yacht Club) have won Gold at the 49er U23 European Championships. The regatta took place in Sicily, Italy and concluded on Sunday, 9 November, featuring the Olympic disciplines of Men’s and Women’s Skiff. The Irish pair delivered a confident performance throughout the regatta, remaining tied for the lead before sealing victory on the final day.
Irish Boxing
Ireland beat India in an International boxing series at the National Stadium in Dublin with 26 wins to India’s 10. The second leg, which took place on Friday at the home of Irish Boxing, included dominant wins for Paris Olympians Jack Marley, Jenny Lehane and Dean Clancy and World bronze medalist, Patsy Joyce.
Caitriona Jennings
Ireland’s Caitriona Jennings rewrote history at the 2025 Tunnel Hill 100 Mile – smashing the women’s 100 Mile world record with a time of 12:37:04 in her first-ever attempt at the distance. She beat the previous record by over 5 minutes and averaged 7:34 per mile across 160.9km. Already the Irish record holder in the 50k & 100k, Caitriona continues to raise the bar in ultra running.
David Clifford and Noel McGrath
The players from Kerry and Tipperary were named as the 2025 Footballer and Hurler of the Year at the 2025 PwC GAA All Star awards at a gala event in the RDS on Friday night.
