Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that deserve recognition. This weekend, we highlight action in Golf, Football, Hurling, Cycling, Athletics and the NFL.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Sky Ireland, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our coverage of football.

Rory McIlroy

In front of a huge crowd, and with drama at every turn, eagling to send the Championship to what became a three-hole playoff, Rory McIlroy became only the second Irish golfer in history, after Harry Bradshaw in 1949, to win a second Amgen Irish Open.

Republic of Ireland Men’s Football

2-0 down after 15 minutes was not the start that the full house of 50,000 fans at the Aviva Stadium were expecting on Saturday, but second-half goals from Evan Ferguson and Adam Idah sent the fans home happier and hoarser.  Northern Ireland were level with Germany in Cologne until the 69th minute but went down 3-1 at the end.

Ronan Dunne

Ronan Dunne won Bronze at the UCI World Mountain Bike Championships in Valais, Switzerland, on Sunday.  Dunne’s time was less than two seconds off Canadian winner Jackson Goldstone, and 0.047 seconds off second-place Henri Kiefer of Germany.

Ballygunner Hurling

The Waterford Champions won their county title for the 11th year in a row beating Mount Sion on Sunday afternoon.

Mark English

The Donegal Doctor continued hiw warm up for the World Athletics Championships with victory in the 800 metres at the World Athletics Continental Tour meet in Beijing.

Dan Whelan

Dan Whelan of Wicklow starred for the Green Bay Packers in their opening game of the NFL season, completing three succesful punt kicks, one of them for 65 yards.
