Today will see the publication of the distribution of €230 million in the Government’s Community Sports Facilities Fund, formerly known as the Sports Capital programme.

It is the largest single tranche of investment made into Irish sporting facilities and will impact in every county and across every sport.

Speaking in the Dáil last week Minister of State Thomas byrne said that there had been 3,210 applications for the funding and that the amount being made available was a fifty percent increase on the previous round.

We will have news as it breaks through the day on where the money is going, followed up by more detailed analysis by county and by sport over the coming days and weeks.

Speaking in the same session Minister of State Byrne also confirmed that applications under the Large Scale Sports infrastructure fund were also being analysed and that there was a total being sought of €660 million.

The funding committed to in this area is €120 million so there will be a bit more trimming needed here than at the more local level.

These are transformational sums and will continue the work being done by different sports and local sports partnerships all across the country.
