There is a lot of sport on at the moment, but none providing such white heat as the GAA Championships.
The schedule for next weekend’s Football Championship Quarter Finals was confirmed today. Donegal will take on Monaghan at Croke Park at 4 PM, followed by Dublin against Tyrone at 6:15 PM, both games to be televised on GAA+.
On Sunday, it will be Meath against Galway at 1:45 PM and Kerry against Galway at 4 PM, with the RTÉ cameras relaying the action to homes across Ireland.
Dublin and Armagh would both be the biggest draws in terms of attendance, so splitting them makes sense, and with RTÉ’s pick for the Armagh-Kerry game, that puts Dublin and Cork onto Saturday.
Donegal fans will be aggrieved that, being the last team to play in the preliminaries this past weekend, they are now the first out, six days later. However, from a ticketing perspective, it is logical to pair the most highly sought-after game with the least, and the reality of demographics suggests that is the optimal mix.
There is also a sense that the perceived injustice might be an added tool in the box of manager Jim McGuinness.
Tickets for Saturday will go on sale at 11 AM on Tuesday, with the Sunday games at 1 pm.
That will give the ticketing systems room to draw breath after Saturday week’s All Ireland Hurling Semi Final between Dublin and Cork at the same venue, which sold out the general public allocation in double quick time earlier today.
It has been a Championship season to savour so far, and as it moves to the business end, it will now take flight in front of sold-out stadia, just as it should.
This week’s podcast features an interview with Donegal fan and Director of GAA+, Noel Quinn, not necessarily in that order, about the first year under the new branding of the service.
