Senator Mark MacSharrySport featured in the Seanad yesterday when Senator Marc MacSharry called on the Minister for Sport to attend the upper house to discuss the funding of sport. He did so against a backdrop of congratulating Sligo Rovers on their victory in the FAI Cup Final but bemoaning the mis-spelling of Sligo on the medals, the fact that players only have 40 week contracts, and the disparity between prize money for winning the final of €50,000 and the salary packages to be paid to Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane as the new management team of the Irish national team.

In politics as in public life the perception is often as important as the reality and the fact that sport should be debated at high political level should be taken as an opportunity. We will be writing to Senator MacSharry to express our thoughts on the subject of sport, business and political support today.
