Newly elected Sinn Féin TD and Chair of Drogheda United Joanna Byrne has been named as party front bench spokesperson on Arts, Sport, Communications, Culture and Media.
She will shadow Patrick O’Donovan named last week as the Senior Minister and the Minister of State with responsibility for sport who we expect to be named later today.
Byrne was included in the Sport for Business AIG Women of Influence in Irish Sport last year, shortly after her election, the first of a Chair of a League of Ireland Club so far as we are aware.
“It is a great honour to be appointed to my party front bench in my first term as a TD. I am more than looking forward to getting to grips with my new brief and to tackling the government on the issues facing the Irish people,” she said.
“I think everyone knows that Sport would be a passion of mine, being the only female Chairperson of a League of Ireland Club, but I will give equal time and commitment to every part of the brief.”
SPORT FOR BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE
This a major boost for the voice of sport in general and football in particular in the cut and thrust of Dáil politics.
