The RDS Arena in Dublin is to host the 2013 Amlin Cup Final, on the evening before the Heineken Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium.Tickets for both matches will go on sale to the general public from next Monday, May 21st.
The double hosting was expected after similar double headers in Cardiff in 2011 and Twickenham this coming weekend. Research following the Cardiff finals showed an economic boost for that city in the region of €30 million.
Ironically it will be a bigger boost the fewer the number of Irish teams that are involved but that was not on the minds of organisers at yesterday’s announcement. 84% of fans who attended the finals in Cardiff, where Leinster beat Northampton in the main event and Harlequins defeating Stade Francais in the Amlin Cup
“Only last week we officially launched the Gathering Ireland 2013, which encourages everyone with an Irish connection to return home next year,” said Leo Varadkar, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport. “I believe next year’s Heineken Cup and Amlin Challenge Cup Final will provide a real festival feel during The Gathering, and will be a great addition to our events calendar for next year.”
2013 will be the third occasion that the Heineken Cup final has been staged in Dublin, but the first time that the city has hosted the Amlin Challenge Cup final. The tournament which features clubs from up to eight European countries could see an Irish involvement in the knockout stages as every season three Heineken Cup clubs qualify for the Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-finals.
“The decision of the ERC Board to stage both the Heineken Cup and the Amlin Challenge Cup finals in Dublin reflects the hugely positive impact Irish clubs and fans have had on European club rugby,”
“ERC has already begun working with Fáilte Ireland and our local partners to ensure that the tens of thousands of supporters who will visit the city will enjoy a hugely positive experience of everything Dublin has to offer,” said ERC Chief Executive, Derek McGrath.
