Dún Laoghaire will become the centre of the Olympic sailing world this week as 141 sailors from 45 countries compete in the 2026 ILCA 7 Men’s World Championship on Dublin Bay.
The Championship is the first Olympic sailing class World Championship to be staged in Ireland for 25 years and represents another significant international sporting event being delivered on Irish shores.
The event runs from August 23rd to 30th, with six days of racing beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, August 25th.
It is being jointly hosted by the Royal St George Yacht Club and the National Yacht Club, with around 100 volunteers from Ireland and overseas involved in delivering the competition afloat and ashore.
The ILCA 7 is the single-handed dinghy used for the men’s competition at the Olympic Games. Every competitor races an essentially identical boat, putting the focus on sailing skill, decision-making and the ability to read changing wind and sea conditions.
Dublin Bay should provide plenty of all three.
The Championship also comes at an important point in the cycle leading up to the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028 and has attracted many of the biggest names in the sport.
Australia’s double Olympic Champion Matt Wearn arrives in outstanding form having won all three Sailing Grand Slam events he has contested this season.
World number one Pavlos Kontides of Cyprus is also in the field, alongside defending World Champion Willem Wiersema of the Netherlands and a host of Olympic and World Championship medallists.
Britain’s Elliot Hanson has already demonstrated his ability on Dublin Bay, winning the Coaches Invitational Regatta staged at the venue in June ahead of Kontides.
Irish Challenge
Ireland will have six sailors on the start line, led by Irish Sailing Senior Team members Finn Lynch of the National Yacht Club and Ewan McMahon of Howth Yacht Club.
They are joined by development athletes Fiachra McDonnell of the Royal Irish Yacht Club and Bobby Driscoll of Ballyholme Yacht Club, together with Tom Coulter of East Antrim Boat Club and Roger Craig of the Royal St George Yacht Club.
Lynch has considerable championship pedigree, having won silver at the ILCA 7 World Championship in 2021.
He also has strong memories of competing internationally on Dublin Bay, having won silver at the World Sailing Youth Championships here in 2012.
McMahon won Youth World Championship silver in Dún Laoghaire four years later.
The home advantage will be valuable, though against a fleet of this depth there will be few easy races.
Major Event Delivery
Beyond the competition itself, the Championships represent an opportunity to demonstrate Ireland’s capacity to stage a technically demanding international sporting event.
Around 100 experienced volunteers are involved across the two host clubs, while advanced technology will be deployed for race starts, results management, and course setting on Dublin Bay.

The Championship is supported by Sport Ireland and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, with XOCEAN, the Royal Marine Hotel, KPMG and Rooster also supporting the event.
For those organisations, the Championship brings an international field and global sailing audience to one of Ireland’s most recognisable maritime locations.
It also adds to a busy period for major international sport in Ireland and gives Dún Laoghaire a valuable showcase as both a sporting venue and destination.
Two World Championships
This will not be a one-off week.
The ILCA 7 Championship will be followed by the ILCA 6 Women’s World Championship from September 5th to 12th, giving Dún Laoghaire two successive opportunities to host the leading performers in Olympic single-handed sailing.
The Medal Races from the Men’s Championship will be livestreamed, with international sailor Maurice O’Connell and Olympic silver medallist Annalise Murphy providing commentary.
