eir Sport has continued its march on securing content with the news that it is to be the exclusive broadcast partner of Ireland’s summer rugby tour to Japan and the United States.

This follows on from holding the same position last November for Ireland’s historic win over the All Blacks in Chicago and winning the rights to the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. It will share the rights to Ireland’s games and the knockout stages with a ‘free to air’ broadcast partner.

It will also be the main broadcast partner for the Women’s rugby World Cup taking place between Dublin and Belfast this august.

Ireland’s games and the Final of that tournament have also been sub licensed to RTÉ who will show that games on RTÉ2 TV and on the RTÉ Player.

“Having this summer’s Irish rugby tour exclusively live, shows our commitment to the game of rugby ahead of the RWC2019,” said Glen Killane, Managing Director of eir TV and Sport.

“We are delighted to play our part in the build-up, to what will be a highly anticipated World Cup and one we are delighted to have on eir Sport.”

“We are also hugely excited for the Women’s Rugby World Cup later this summer and will be supporting the Women’s team as they hope to make history this August.”

The crossover nature of how sporting content is consumed was also reflected today in the news that the eir Sport app is now compatible with chromecast, giving eir broadband customers the ability to cast the eir Sport app directly to their TV’s.

“The summer of content that we have announced today shows the diverse range of sport we are showing here at eir Sport and the focus we have on Irish led sport,” added Killane.

“There is something there for everybody with international rugby and football, along with SSE Airtricity games, the U20 World Rugby Championship from Ukraine, the GAA Club Championship, pre-season friendlies in soccer, UFC, boxing, motor sport and much more.”

“Our ambition is to continue being Ireland’s number one sports broadcaster on TV and mobile and this ambition is only strengthened by today’s announcement and the exciting line up we have this summer.”
