The FAI has been awarded a grant of €390,000 by FIFA to contribute towards the construction of new facilities for elite players at the national Sports Campus in Abbotstown.
The Government has also committed a sum of €500,000 towards the construction of two new state of the art pitches and dressing room facilities adjacent to the FAI headquarters.
Work is expected to start on the construction of the pitches in March 2013.  It will be the second major participation infrastructure project on the site after the national aquatic centre and will be the first tangible sign of commitments given earlier this year by the FAI, IRFU, GAA and Irish Hockey Association to develop projects alongside some of the existing facilities including the Irish Institute of Sport.
The National Sports Campus Authority started work this month on the construction of facilities for hosting the governing bodies of 19 different sports on site as well.
“This development is fully in line with the partnership strategy we have developed whereby we develop a common infrastructure and grant lands to sporting bodies which they will then develop,” said National Sports Campus CEO Barry O’Brien.
“We will now be placing contracts for site clearance, infrastructure and multi-purpose all weather facilities, all of which will be getting underway in the coming weeks.”
