We have long known President Michael D Higgins to be a fan of Irish football and he will be in his element on tonight’s Late Late Show when he will be joined in the studio by Paul McGrath, Stephen Kenny, Vera Pauw and a host of guests to celebrate the FAI Centenary taking place this year.

He will be talking about his Machnamh 100 series of seminars on the War of Independence and Civil War, his decade as president of Ireland and his love of football.

Niall Quinn, David O’Leary, Packie Bonner and Shay Given will also be there to share their memories of the glory days of Irish football.

The present and the future will be represented by current internationals Gavin Bazunu, Dara O’Shea, Jessie Stapleton and Chloe Mustaki.

John Charlton will also be joining in to pay tribute to his father, the late, great Jack Charlton.

There may be a rendition of The Fields of Athenry and expect an announcement as well about ongoing visibility of the Republic of Ireland national team.
