Concern is likely to be growing at the FAI over the future of one of its principal commercial supporters, kit manufacturer Umbro.
It was announced yesterday that the brand was to be replaced as England team supplier by Nike, a switch that has also taken place at Manchester City.  Nike bought Umbro in 2008 in a bid to increase its reach into football, a sport where Adidas dominates.
Things have not worked out as planned however and the company is now on the market but with its main contracts being taken away.
The Republic of Ireland, Norway and Sweden are now listed on the company web site as its principal remaining contracts, alongside Glasgow Rangers and Europa League winners Atletico Madrid.
Umbro is a significant investor at other levels of the game in Ireland.  It is kit supplier to a number of Airtricity Premier League Clubs including Shamrock Rovers. It also sponsors the Umbro Galway Cup each August, one of the largest under age tournaments in Europe, the Umbro Senior Schools tournament and the FAI Umbro Women’s FAI Cup competition.
