Fitbit SurgeFitbit has announced it is to base its new European Headquarters in Ireland and plans to employ 50 people there by the end of the year.

Former Phillips Senior Executive and Trinity College Graduate Des Power has been appointed to head up the company’s expansion plans across the continent. He is returning to work in Ireland for the first time in 30 years.

“We have seen Dublin become a strategic hub for technology companies, with a great talent pool and as a centre for innovation,” said Global CEO James Park.

The company has produced almost 50 million devices and is a leading player within the connected fitness sector.

“Fitbit is one of the world’s most popular and fastest growing health and wellness companies, and I am delighted that they have selected Ireland as the location for their EMEA Headquarters as it will provide exciting employment opportunities for our skilled workers,” said Minister for Jobs and Innovation Mary Mitchell O’Connor.

The new offices on Baggot Street have room for further expansion.  They will house the company’s strategic business functions for the region including senior management, sales, marketing, customer service and finance.
