Maeve Buckley of Leading Sport and Rob Hartnett of Sport for Business were the guiding commentators in a piece published about the future of Sports streaming on The Journal’s Business site Fora yesterday.

Ian Curran’s look at how global streaming player DAZN (pronounced Da Zone) covers the rights it has gathered in boxing for its Irish launch as part of international expansion.

Buckley considers the impact it could have on incumbents like Sky TV and BT Sport while Hartnett dives into the world of Micro Payments and how TV rights have brought a sport like Netball back to life.

“When it comes to the sometimes confusing business of broadcast rights, Irish fans are getting used to being thrown curveballs,” says Curran.

“With these streaming giants poised to burst onto the crowded scene, they should be prepared for the landscape to change yet again.”

As things stand at the moment the sports rights and media market is holding its breath waiting for clarity on when regular sport will return to a normal extensive schedule.

That may be some time away yet but if you need a six-minute read to while away the time that might otherwise have gone into sponsorship activation, fixture planning or running a business at a faster pace, then here it is…
