FUEL has acquired sports marketing agency 53Six in a deal that brings together two of Ireland’s more ambitious businesses active across sport, entertainment, live experience, and audience growth.

53Six will retain its existing brand and will continue to be led by co-founders Tom Fox and Marcus McDonnell as CEO and COO respectively, now as part of the wider FUEL group.

The deal gives FUEL a significant new presence in sports marketing, performance media, and fan data at a time when those areas are increasingly connected to live events, content, and entertainment.

It also gives 53Six access to a much larger international platform.

FUEL is headquartered in Dublin, with teams in the UK and US, and has grown from the business Jamie Deasy and Brian McDermott founded in 2013 into a group delivering more than 650 events and experiences across 55 cities.

Its client base includes PayPal, Coca-Cola, Google, Meta, Airbnb, Universal Music Group, World Rugby, and Amgen, and it is also behind WellFest, Beyond the Pale, and Kaleidoscope.

Recent projects have ranged from U2’s 50th anniversary celebration with Universal Music Group and Full Stop Management to the fan village at the Amgen Irish Open, World Cup fan zones for Budweiser and major international Coca-Cola conferences.

53Six brings a very different, but complementary, set of skills.

Founded in 2016, the Dublin and London-based agency has built its business around sports strategy, creative, content, performance marketing and the use of fan data to drive audience and commercial growth.

Its client list includes Arsenal, Juventus, UEFA, the FAI, IRFU, Leinster Rugby, Jacksonville Jaguars and Flutter.

Among its recent work, 53Six supported TEG Sport with digital campaigns around major fixtures, including the Irish women’s rugby team’s first match at the Aviva Stadium, while its ongoing relationship with Leinster Rugby combines content and storytelling with the development of a new customer data platform.

It has also delivered international campaign work for Betfair, including a World Cup activation in Spain fronted by Luis Figo.

Sporting organisations and sponsors are increasingly looking beyond a single campaign, event, or content output to better understand who their fans are, how they engage, and what drives them to attend, subscribe, buy, or participate.

FUEL can now bring its live-experience and production scale together with the audience intelligence and sports marketing expertise already established within 53Six.

This creates the potential for a much broader offer to rights holders and brands, particularly those looking to connect the stadium or fan zone experience with the digital relationship before and after an event.

“We’re delighted to welcome 53Six into the FUEL group,” said FUEL Co-Founder and Managing Director Jamie Deasy.

“We’ve known Tom, Marcus and the team for some time, and there’s a very strong cultural alignment and shared ambition between our two companies.”

“53Six brings deep expertise in sport, performance marketing and audience intelligence, while FUEL brings scale across live experiences, entertainment and high-end content production.”

Deasy said the ambition was to create “an end-to-end global growth engine” around fandom, combining live experience and content with the data and insight needed to demonstrate their impact.

For 53Six, the acquisition is also intended to accelerate international growth.

“We were looking for a strategic partner that understood how sport and live experiences are more and more interconnected, and could further accelerate our growth internationally,” said Fox.

“Since day one, we’ve believed in the power of sport to create meaningful shared experiences, and in today’s world that belief feels more relevant than ever.”

McDonnell described the two businesses as highly complementary.

“53Six brings the sharp end of sports marketing, FUEL brings scale across experiences and high-end production, and together we share expertise in content and creative,” he said.

“That’s a genuinely different proposition for the industry.”

The deal further shows how quickly the definition of sports marketing is widening.

Rights holders increasingly want agencies to demonstrate more than reach or creative impact. They want stronger first-party data, clearer measures of fan behaviour, and a stronger link between engagement and commercial return.

At the same time, brands are putting greater value on experiences that create a sense of belonging around sport, music and culture.

Bringing those capabilities under one group gives FUEL and 53Six the opportunity to compete for larger international briefs while retaining a strong base in the Irish market.
