The 2015 Fexco Asian Gaelic Games will take place on October 24th and 25th in Shanghai, China. They will bring together 65 teams from 20 clubs across 18 countries in Asia, and will see more than 700 Irish, as well as non-Irish GAA players who have picked up the sport, come together to battle it out in over 200 fixtures.
Prior to the tournament, the 9th annual Asia-Pacific Irish Business Forum (APIBF) will be held on Friday, October 23rd in the Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale Oriental Hotel in Pudong, Shanghai bringing together Irish business people in the Asia region and those with an interest in Irish business. Guest speakers on the day will be Aogán Ó Fearghail, Tadhg Kennelly and Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh in addition to a number of keynote speakers involved in Irish businesses in the region.
“The Fexco Asian Gaelic Games is a true reflection of the work and commitment of the Asian County Board and the participating players,” said Director General of the GAA, Paraic Duffy.
“This year represents a significant milestone as we mark the 20th Anniversary of the Asian Gaelic Games,” added Joe Trolan, Chair of the Asian County Board
“Over the past two decades, the games have continued to grow from strength to strength, and this year we hope to welcome the highest ever number of participants to Shanghai for the games.”
“It is due, in no small part, to the support of companies like Fexco that we can continue to host such a remarkable event every year.”
A party of ambassadors for Gaelic Games will travel to Shanghai from Ireland and participate fully in events surrounding the tournament. These will include star players including Alan Brogan of Dublin and Cora Staunton of Mayo, as well as commentator Micheál O’Muircheartaigh.
The games will include tournaments across football, hurling, Ladies football and Camogie at adult and juvenile level. All games will be 9-a-side and last 14 minutes.
The tournament has been running since 1996 and moves from city to city each year – they have been hosted in Manila, Singapore, Phuket, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Penang, Bangkok, Seoul and Kuala Lumpar.
“We are delighted once again to partner with the Asian County Board to sponsor this truly international community linked GAA sporting event,” said Denis Cleary, Managing Director of Fexco’s Dynamic Currency Conversion division.
“This sponsorship is a natural fit for Fexco as the passion, relationships and professionalism of the games are reflected in our own core values.”
The company has operations in 33 countries around the world and is also a natural fit as the partner for the GAA in expanding the international reach of the games. It employs more than 2,000 people across Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, North America and Latin America.
