The Bus Éireann sponsored Féile na nGael and Féile na nÓg tournaments were launched in Croke Park yesterday with more emphasis on the playing rather than the winning of games at this under age level.
“This year Féile will operate on national, regional and provincial levels as part of what is a hugely important competition for the GAA and especially for those with a special interest in underage activity,” said GAA President Liam O’Neill.
“Given the massive importance attached to our underage activity the new format for Féile is one we welcome offering as it does more young players the opportunity to participate in a weekend of fun and action that they will cherish for many years to come.”
“Sometimes we apply adult values to children’s activities and this inevitably leads to the development of a win at all costs mentality. Such an approach does not lend itself to wholesale inclusive involvement and pressure can be brought to bear on young budding players that detract from their enjoyment.”
Pressures
“I am pleased that the new competition structures have the potential to address these pressures and in the process bring the Féile competition to more clubs and crucially more young players.”
The Bus Éireann Féile na nGael tournament will be hosted on a provincial basis by Ulster, beginning on Friday, June 20 and concluding on Sunday June 22, while Féile na nÓg is hosted by Connacht from Friday June 27 to Sunday, June 29.
Almost 500 clubs, 1,500 coaches and 12,000 boys and girls will participate across each of the two weekends.
