The Aviva Stadium is busy most days with meetings and conferences even when the public eye is elsewhere but yesterday had a group of different visitors when the Georgia Tech Twisters Cheer team came to check out the venue and try a few moves.
They will be back with their College footballers and more than 20,000 travelling fans from the United States for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic on Saturday, August 24th.
They will have to hold their own in the ground and on the streets against a larger than normal presence from the ‘away team’ Florida State University.
The deal to bring the teams over includes the promoters here paying for 70 band members and cheerleaders to travel but FSU have decided to go big and are bringing a group of 200 to light up Dublin that weekend.
Seeing the athleticism and the timing of the Cheer team men and women is one of the many highs that the game brings to town and clips of the team in action from yesterday suggest this year will be no different on that front.
Over 10,000 local ticket sales were made last week when they went on sale for the first time to the domestic audience and the game is heading towards a sell-out a full five months before the first snap.
We learned last night from Laurin Hamlin, the Head of Innovation at Under Armour speaking at One-Zero that Founder Kevin Plank won his first contract for gear from Georgia Tech, having designed his first shirts for teammates at the University of Maryland.
He could be an interested observer in the stands in August.
Tickets for the 2024 Aer Lingus College Football Classic between Georgia Tech and Florida State University are on sale now at www.ticketmaster.ie/collegefootball. The fixture will take place at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin, on Saturday, 24th August 2024 and limited tickets are available.
