Greyhound racing is to feature on RTÉ1’s Nationwide Programme this evening with the story of Daniel O’Rahilly featuring as a Young Achiever.

17-year-old O’Reilly took a few days off his fifth-year studies at school in Ballymacelligott, County Kerry, in April to bring the greyhound he owns and trains, Knockeen Dazzler, to victory in the prestigious Con and Annie Kirby Memorial Race at Limerick Greyhound Stadium.

The race also serves as a significant fundraiser for Limerick GAA, LGFA, and Camogie clubs. This year, there was a bonus for two Grand National winners from horse racing, both owned by JP McManus, parading at the track.

There was also a strong environmental twist to this year’s event. Each participating club was invited to plant a tree on the stadium grounds, symbolising their dedication to sustainability and commemorating the event for years to come.

Tonight’s show will be presented by Mary Fanning, who visited Kerry to meet O’Rahilly, no doubt minimising the additional time he would be taking away from his leaving cert studies.

The programme will be broadcast at 7.00 pm on Wednesday 23rd October.
