One of the sporting highlights on TV over the weekend was our first sight of the Women’s AFL on TG4.
There were some bone-crunching tackles but plenty of skill as well and the opening game saw four Irish players in action with Ailish Considine ending up on the winning Adelaide Crows team, up against Grace and Niamh Kelly from Mayo and Aisling McCarthy of Tipperary on the West Coast Eagles side.
McCarthy was very visible as she has also signed up as a brand ambassador for Gym+Coffee who were also unveiled as the broadcast sponsors of TG4’s coverage.
TG4 will be broadcasting weekly AFLW matches as well as Monday night highlights starting this weekend and running for the full 12-week season.
There are 14 Irish players across the league including Sinead Goldrick, Niamh McEvoy and Lauren Magee from the 2020 All Ireland Ladies Football Champions Dublin.
Senior players are also down under from Mayo, Tipperary, Leitrim, Clare, Cork and Cavan and it will be great to follow their progress over the coming months.
“Although 20X20 as an organisation closed its doors at the end of last year, the spirit and passion to increase female participation in sport and coverage of women’s sport in the Irish media needs to live on and this is such an important way for us to continue to be a part of the movement,” said Diarmuid McSweeney of Gym+Coffee.
The company has physical outlets in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and London, a growing online service around the world and communities that have stuck together during lockdown.
