Athletics Ireland has unveiled its initial squad for the World Athletics Championships, set to take place at Tokyo’s Japan National Stadium from 13–21 September 2025.

Among those named are Sarah Healy in the Women’s 1500m, Kate O’Connor in the Women’s Heptathlon, Mark English in the Men’s 800m, Nicola Tuthill in the Women’s Hammer, and Sharlene Mawdsley in the Women’s 400m as well as both the Mixed and Women’s 4x400m Relays.

Marathon runners Hiko Tonosa, Peter Lynch, and Fionnuala McCormack had already been confirmed for the Tokyo event earlier this year.

Healy will be making her third World Championships appearance at just 24 years of age, following a season in which she has delivered a string of world-class performances.

The European Indoor 3000m champion has run 3:59 or faster in every 1500m or mile this summer, with a personal best of 3:57.15 in Paris and a Diamond League win in Rome.

She competes tonight in the Diamond League Final in Zurich, where she will take on a field that includes Olympic and World medallists. With Ciara Mageean’s Irish record of 3:55.87 edging ever closer, Healy’s race tonight will provide a fascinating marker ahead of Tokyo.

Mark English has also been in outstanding form, claiming European Indoor bronze and setting a new Irish 800m record of 1:43.37 in Budapest.

Kate O’Connor continues to push new boundaries in the Heptathlon, improving her own Irish record to 6487 points last month.

Sharlene Mawdsley has been central to Ireland’s recent relay successes, helping both the Women’s and Mixed 4x400m teams qualify for Tokyo, while Nicola Tuthill has progressed to 71.75m in the Hammer to cement her place among Europe’s brightest young throwers.
