The Irish Independent newspaper is to publish a new free weekly magazine dedicated to fitness. FIT magazine will cover running, walking, triathlons, bootcamps, personal trainers, swimming, cycling and gyms. The first issue is published this morning, Thursday, May 17th.
Launched weeks before the Flora Women’s Marathon, the timing of the magazine should give it a good start among a national audience that has taken to fitness like never before. The Irish Sports Council estimates that 60,000 runners are doing so regularly now, a six fold increase on the likely figure of regular runners from only five years ago.
The magazine will cover nutrition, sports injuries and equipment in a market where there is still significant advertising and marketing potential.
At the Media Future Conference in Dun Laoghaire earlier this week it was raised by a number of speakers that there remains a very strong market for niche publishing of special interest material. That is doubtless where the Independent is aiming with Fit Magazine, and indeed where Sport for Business is aimed in a digital environment.
Fit Magazine is flagged prominently on this morning’s newspaper but there is no link yet to a digital version on the website.
