There will likely be a capacity 4,000 fans at Tallaght Stadium this evening for the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team meeting with Australia.
The game is also being televised live on RTÉ with a kick-off time of 7 PM. Long time friend of Sport for business Paula Brady will be the referee.
It is a challenging game for the Irish side coming off the back of seven straight defeats in Euro 2021 qualification and subsequent friendlies.
The defeats though have included games against Germany (twice), Belgium, Denmark and Iceland (twice), all of whom are in the World Top 20.
So too are Australia and Sweden who we will face in the opening game of the qualification group for the 2023 FIFA World Cup.
Tonight’s opponents will be hosting that and come to Ireland fresh from a fourth place finish at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Their star player Sam Kerr plays for Chelsea in the Barclays Women’s Super League and is rated one of the best players in the world. Tonight she will earn her 100th cap, and is her countries top goal scorer with 48 goals to her name.
“It’s an exciting game, Australia are a top-class side and it will be a great test for us,” said Ireland Captain Katie McCabe.
“We’ve been playing against a lot of top-quality teams of late and they certainly fall into that bracket.”
“I know a few of the Australian players from my club, Arsenal, and we’ve been having a laugh talking about the game. But it will be down to business on Tuesday for them and for us because we want to put on a good performance.”
“One of the big things about this game is that we can finally have our fans back in Tallaght after so long away due to COVID. We’re fully aware of the need to maintain social distancing and the protocols in place, but there is no doubt that they will make a difference for us – they have always been fully behind us.”
