The World Lacrosse Men’s U21 World Championship is underway at the University of Limerick and Ireland have scored a win in their opening game against Germany.

There could not have been a better start for the hosts for whom Aidan Dempsey of Ohio Northern University scored five goals in the 12-5 win.

Germany are ranked above Ireland in both the Senior and Underage grades so the win on home soil was a real boost to the Ireland Lacrosse team who have done trojan work to ensure the tournament was saved for Limerick after being originally postponed due to Covid.

Ireland will now play Jamaica and Latvia in the group stages on Saturday and Sunday afternoon before going into the bracket phase of the tournament that will run through to the Final on Saturday, August 20th.

It is being broadcast around the world, on ESPN to the United States and there is significant promotion of Ireland as a destination, backing up Fáilte Ireland’s support of the event.

There is also a World Festival taking place around the Championships with Masters and age grade games taking place and opportunities to get to know the sport.
