Eleven Sports is to launch its online sports broadcast service in Ireland with exclusive coverage of the US PGA Tournament, Golf’s final major.
The channel has bought the exclusive rights for the UK and Ireland and will be the only place where the action can be seen live and in full between August 9th and 12th.
Eleven Sports will be the latest additional paid service that sports fans will need to consider as they have also bought the exclusive rights to Italian Serie A and Spanish La Liga matches for the next three seasons.
When those leagues start later in the summer there will be a monthly subscription and discussions are also believed to be taking place with Virgin and Sky over carrying the channel on set-top boxes.
For the US PGA, the offering will be through Apple and Android devices in mobile as well as online at elevensports.uk and streamed live on Facebook.
The service through the US PGA will be free for a seven day trial period and will carry live coverage with its own teams of hosts and analysts through the four days of competition.
Eleven Sports was originally created in the Belgian and Luxembourg markets and now has offerings in Italy, Portugal, Poland, Taiwan, Singapore and the United States. The rights it has and the programming it airs is different in each territory.
“Launching Eleven Sports in the UK and Ireland with such a prestigious event as the 100th PGA Championship, confirms our position as a major player in the market,” said Danny Menken, Group Managing Director, Eleven Sports.
“We are looking forward to maximising this fantastic opportunity to appeal to existing golf fans through comprehensive free-to-air live coverage and analysis, while also growing new audiences with our fresh and innovative ways of delivering leading sports action.”
“It is a tremendous way to celebrate the 100th PGA Championship by becoming the inaugural free-to-air program on Eleven Sports in the United Kingdom and Ireland,” said PGA of America Chief Commercial Officer Jeff Price.
“We are excited that Eleven Sports will deliver major championship golf to diverse audiences through multiple, leading-edge digital platforms that are uniquely designed to connect to both the modern day and the next generation of fans.”
Last year’s PGA Championship was shown live and free to air on the BBC in the UK and Ireland having previously been a long term styaple of Sky Sports golf coverage.
