History was made on Friday when the Irish Men’s Cricket team secured a first ever Test Match victory, beating Afghanistan by six-wickets at the Tolerance Oval.
Ireland became a full Test Nation recognised by the International Cricket Council on 22nd June 2017.
This was their eighth Test Match since that elevation.
For context it places them as the sixth fastest team to secure a first win.
Australia won the first ever test Match, against England in Melbourne between March 15th and 19th 1877.
England, Pakistan and Afghanistan won at the second time of asking, Afghanistan against Ireland.
The West Indies took six attempts, followed by Ireland.
After that, Zimbabwe won on their 11th attempt, South Africa on their 12th, Sri Lanka on their 13th, India on their 25th, Bangladesh on their 35th and New Zealand on their 45th.
It is a special moment, steeped in history in a sport where that is of real value and in the words of the ICC after the game, “Sets Ireland as an inspiration to emerging cricket nations.”
The team of history makers were:
PJ Moor, Andrew Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, Harry Tector, Theo Van Woerkom, Paul Stirling, Lorcan Tucker, Andy McBrine, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, and Craig Young
