Sport for Business understands that RTÉ will carry live coverage of next Saturday’s crucial qualifier for the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

While no formal announcement has yet been made it has been added to the schedule on RTÉ2 ahead of the coverage of Munster Vs the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship.

Ireland’s victory over Italy last Saturday has left each of the four teams on five points going into the final round of round-robin games.

The winner of the tournament books their place directly for Australia and New Zealand next year, the runner up goes on to a last chance qualification tournament involving the runners up from the European, Asian, Oceania qualifiers and either Kenya or Colombia.

Ireland’s game against Scotland will be on at 5 pm after the conclusion of the game between Spain and Italy.

Ireland needs to win in order to be assured of continued participation. And to win with Italy beating Spain to be assured of going straight to the World Cup Finals.

In tournaments organised by World Rugby the first criteria for determining two teams tied on equal points is the head to head between them, then the points difference of the overall group.

If Italy has beaten Spain with or without a bonus point, then an Irish win by the same margin will guarantee passage to the World Cup Finals. If Spain wins under that criteria though, we will be heading to the last chance qualifier, even with a win over Scotland. The securing or not of a winning bonus point could yet be crucial.

Defeat will mean a final exit from the tournament we hosted the last renewal of in 2017.

RTÉ’s coverage is expected to take the World Rugby visual feed but with its own commentary team. That has yet to be finalised between the two games.
