The start and finish location of the Irish Life Dublin Marathon is to remain in the city centre on Sunday, October 27th.
The announcement from Race Organisers and Dublin City Council comes after constructive engagement around challenges raised last year by the National Transport Authority about the impact on the City.
Both parties have been working together to develop a feasible solution to retain the character of what is now Europe’s fifth biggest City Marathon while minimising disruption to the area over the October bank holiday weekend.
“We are very proud as a city to host the fifth biggest marathon in Europe in Dublin City,” said Dublin City CEO Richard Shakespeare.
“The event brings celebration and vibrancy as well as significant social and economic benefits for the city. It is also a substantial operational undertaking that requires careful management. Together with the Dublin marathon organisers, we have developed a comprehensive plan that works for everyone.”
The Irish Life Dublin Marathon will start on Leeson Street Lower and finish on Mount Street Upper, remaining within the Dublin 2 area and ensuring the route will run through the city centre streets.
Changes to the course are therefore minimal and with the added bonus of bringing the Pepper Canister Church on Mount Street to a watching audience as well as 22,500 runners.
The church is pictured above with Aideen O’Connor of the Dublin City Sport and Wellbeing Partnership, Jim Aughney of the Irish Life Dublin Marathon and Martin Kelly who has run in every renewal of the race.
“We are thrilled to confirm that the Irish Life Dublin Marathon will be on the streets of Dublin’s city centre,” added Aughney.
“Running the marathon is a momentous occasion for participants and being in the heart of the capital city makes that moment even more special for them and their families and friends who come out to support them.”
“We also need to ensure a safe experience for everyone involved. We have worked closely with Dublin City Council on finalising the start and finish location. We are grateful for their support and look forward to making this event a success.”
