The IRFU has published a rugby participation roadmap for the 2021/22 season, which hopes to see a full staging of the Energia AIL League starting in the autumn.

Ahead of that, and in line with public health measures, it is hoped to have “a summer of fun and participation for players of all levels, ages and abilities.”

Training, match and tournament formats including Touch Rugby, Tag Rugby, 7s Rugby, 10s Rugby and 15s Rugby will hope to be organised and clubs will be allowed to organise local friendlies to comply with travel restrictions.

There will be no obligation on clubs to participate until they feel they are ready.

This will lead up to a hoped-for resumption of a full 18 game season in the Energia AIL Leagues, involving 50 men’s teams and ten women’s teams from August.

That is the target date for the resumption of full U20, schools, age grade and mini rugby as well, though limited non-contact training for children is permitted from today.

A statement issued with the document on Friday outlined that:

“If public health or other factors do not permit a full All-Ireland competition, the contingency is an Energia Community Series at a provincial level in the first half of the season followed by a shorter format Energia All-Ireland League in 2022.”

“The IRFU will continue to communicate directly with clubs and schools on season planning and a safe resumption of rugby activity. Further dates and details on activities outlined in this roadmap will be issued when available.”
