The Cannon Kirk Irish Squash Open Championship is underway at the Fitzwilliam Club in Dublin with four Irish players in action against overseas opposition on Day One.

Hannah McGugan and Breanne Flynn lost out to opponents from New Zealand and Malaysia while Sam Buckley brought Henry Leung from Hong Kong, ranked 57 in the world, to a deciding fifth set before losing.

Sean Conroy was the last of the home players to take to the court, against Mo Syafiq Kamal from Malaysia, ranked 74 in the world. Kamal took the first set but Conroy fought back and levelled the match, winning the 2nd 11-9 in a very tight match before eventually going down 3-1

The top 8 seeds in both events play their first matches today and all the action is being broadcast live on Irish Squash TV on the Irish Squash website.

This is the first time that the Open has been held since 2019 and the prizemoney on offer is a substantial €60,000 across the Men’s and Women’s Competitions.

The tournament is backed by Cannon Kirk developers with support as well from Gillen Markets and Sport Ireland.
