Jason Smyth is one of Ireland’s greatest athletes, if not the best ever. He has six Paralympic Games Gold medals stretching from the 100 and 200 Metres double in Beijing and London to further glory at the minimum distance in Rio and Tokyo.

We spoke to Jason on his return home to Belfast after the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics in 2021.

The conversation ranged over his children’s reaction to having their Dad back home, to the emotion of watching Michael McKillop’s race and not being there for him as had always been the case, through to how and when he would be getting back onto the track and what his ambitions are on the road towards Paris 2024 and a possible fifth Paralympic Games.

Smyth has been an Allianz Paralympic brand ambassador since 2016. Earlier this year he appeared in the second episode of Allianz Courage Chronicle series. The Courage Chronicles pulled back the curtain on the trials and tribulations of Ireland’s elite athletes as they set their sights on representing Ireland in Tokyo. In the video Jason spoke about the key attributes that have seen him become one of Ireland’s most successful and recognisable Paralympic athletes, including a strong sense of self-belief that there is no limit to what he can achieve.

Allianz Ireland has been a proud partner of Paralympics Ireland since 2010 and has been a champion of Paralympic sport in Ireland throughout. Allianz sponsored the first ever live broadcasts of Para Sport in Ireland during the London 2012 Paralympic Games on Eir Sport and again during the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Paralympic Games bringing coverage to the nation through RTE.

At a global level, Allianz was announced earlier this year as the Worldwide Insurance Partner of the Olympic & Paralympic Movements from 2021 to 2028. Through this partnership, Allianz will work with the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee to propose innovative and integrated insurance solutions that support the Olympic and Paralympic Games, sport fans, national teams and athletes.

“All the team in Allianz Ireland is extremely proud of Jason’s performance in Tokyo,” said CEO Sean McGrath.

“Jason has done so much for Para sport over his career and the courage that he has shown is outstanding. Jason is a standout role model for Ireland’s young people, and we were extremely proud to watch him cement his legacy in Tokyo.”
