Bord Gais Energy launches Ladies Football League campaign
Bord Gáis Energy has continued its association with Gaelic Games by announcing the fourth year of its support for the Ladies Gaelic Football National League.  The tournament gets under way this weekend with Cork setting out to win the title for a fourth year in a row.
Monaghan will be keen to stop that quest having gone through the League format unbeaten last season before coming unstuck in the semi final against Laois.
Last year’s final was televised live on TG4, who themselves support the All Ireland Championship later in the year.
Bord gais Energy also support the U21 Hurling Championship, the IRUPA Rugby Players Awards and the Cork City Marathon.
Transfer Deadline Day in football presents more modest results
After the frenzy of 2011 when €225 million was spent in the January transfer deadline window, this year presented a more modest outlay with less than one quarter of that amount spent.
It may reflect a sense of reality among Europe’s top clubs who UEFA announced last week as having recorded aggregate losses of €1.6 billion in the past twelve months.
Then again the figure of €35 million in 2010 heralded a false dawn of restraint as well.
A rumoured move to Everton for Kevin Doyle did not materialise but Andy Kehoe did leave the midlands club for Millwall, where Eamon Dunphy once famously plied his trade.
Johnston request hits block over residency
Transfers in Gaelic Games are less about money than parish and the request by Cavan’s Sean Johnston to switch to Kildare has caused much comment.  No money changes hands but there is an emotional wrench for the player and the team he is leaving behind.
Cavan County Board have raised questions over Johnson’s residency in Straffan County Kildare before deciding whether to object to the transfer or not.  He remains a teacher in Cavan and his claim to be living now in Straffan, County Kildare, a fact that would enable a transfer, has been queried.  He now needs to prove his home address by way of utility bills or similar means.
