The Ladies Gaelic Football Association and Lidl Ireland have announced the return of the #SeriousSupport Club Programme for 2026, continuing a joint commitment to supporting youth mental health at grassroots level across the country.
Following the success of last year’s initiative, applications are now open for clubs nationwide, with one club from each county set to be selected, ensuring representation and impact across all four provinces.
The programme is centred on the ‘five a day’ approach to mental wellbeing — connect, be active, take notice, keep learning, and give — providing a structured framework for clubs to create positive and supportive environments for young people.
Running from April through to July, participating clubs will receive training and guidance, while documenting their activities through social media and a dedicated online platform. Clubs that complete all five elements will receive official #SeriousSupport accreditation along with a new set of jerseys.
In addition, clubs will be eligible for a share of a €10,000 funding pool, with awards recognising innovation, community engagement, and overall programme delivery.
Eimear O’Sullivan, Corporate Affairs Director for Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland, said the initiative continues to demonstrate the value of sport as a vehicle for wellbeing.
“We are delighted to once again invite LGFA clubs to be part of this impactful initiative,” she said. “Team sport plays a vital role in supporting young people’s wellbeing, and we look forward to seeing clubs embrace the five themes. I would also like to congratulate our 2025 winners for their inspiring contributions.”
Trina Murray, President of the LGFA, added that the partnership is delivering tangible benefits within communities.
“Our partnership with Lidl Ireland continues to deliver meaningful mental health initiatives,” she said. “The #SeriousSupport Club Programme has already demonstrated the positive impact clubs can have when mental wellbeing is prioritised, and I would encourage clubs to register for what promises to be another strong programme in 2026.”
The 2025 awards recognised Clonard Volunteers (Most Innovative Initiative), Tyholland (Strongest Community Engagement), and Cahir (Best Overall Engagement).
Alongside the national programme, the LGFA has also confirmed the continuation of its LGFA TALK Project in Northern Ireland, targeting clubs across Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone. The six-week initiative is designed to build awareness of positive mental health among members aged 13 to 18.
The programme reflects a growing recognition within sport of the importance of mental wellbeing, and the role that community-based organisations can play in fostering resilience, connection and support among young people.
Applications for the 2026 #SeriousSupport Club Programme are open until April 10th.
